In the civil war days, soldiers used shelter halves. Of course, this doesn't sound like much protection, but they were used because of their flexibility and lightweight design that made them easy to move. They could also be combined with other halves if needed for additional protection from harsh weather conditions. These tents would often be held up by sticks with a blanket underneath to create even ground (this is why we often use tarps underneath our tents today!).

These days, it's possible to get your hands on replicas of these rapid-assembly tents. Military tents are powerful shelters against extreme conditions and are built to repel rain and snow.
